Cybersecurity Firm Achieves Top-3 AI Overview Citations For 12 High-Value Queries

Enterprise security buyers research extensively before ever filling out a contact form. For this firm, that entire research phase used to happen without them in the room.

The Challenge

Enterprise security purchases rarely happen quickly, and the research phase that precedes them happens almost entirely without a vendor's sales team in the room. A security architect comparing zero-trust frameworks, or a CISO researching how a particular threat category gets mitigated, increasingly does that research through Google's AI Overviews rather than clicking through a string of vendor blog posts. For this enterprise security firm, that research phase used to happen with one citation, at best, across the twelve queries its prospects asked most often before reaching out.

The technical content existed and was genuinely good - written by people who clearly understood the material. The problem was structural. Articles ran 3,000 words without a single clear, extractable answer near the top; instead, the actual answer to "what is the difference between X and Y" was buried in paragraph six, after several paragraphs of necessary but front-loaded context. AI Overviews tend to favor content that states its conclusion plainly and supports it afterward, not content that builds toward a conclusion the way a well-argued whitepaper does. Good writing, wrong structure for the medium that increasingly mattered most.

The Approach

01
Technical Audit
Weeks 1–4

We ran a full technical audit of the resource center, identifying crawl inefficiencies caused by an overly deep content hierarchy, missing or duplicate canonical tags across syndicated content, and inconsistent heading structure that made it harder for AI crawlers to identify where one subtopic ended and the next began.

02
Semantic Content Restructuring
Weeks 3–12

We rewrote the twelve highest-priority articles to lead with a direct, two-to-three sentence answer immediately after the heading, with the deeper technical context that made the original content valuable preserved below it rather than in front of it. The expertise didn't change. Where it sat on the page did.

03
Expert Digital PR
Weeks 8–18

We secured commentary placements for the firm's CTO in two industry analyst reports and a contributed technical column in a respected security publication, each reinforcing the same definitions and frameworks now structured clearly on the firm's own resource center, giving AI engines corroborating sources that agreed with each other.

04
AI Overview Position Tracking
Week 6 Onward

From week six on, we tracked the firm's position, not just presence, across the twelve target queries weekly, distinguishing between appearing anywhere in an AI Overview and appearing in the top three sources, since enterprise buyers rarely scroll past the first few citations when researching under time pressure.

The Results

Six months in, the firm holds a top-three AI Overview citation on all twelve of its target high-value queries, up from a single citation at the outset. On four of those queries, restructured content now holds the number-one position, ahead of analyst firms and larger competitors that had previously dominated the answer.

Organic traffic to the resource center grew 2.4x over the engagement, with the largest gains concentrated on the restructured pages rather than spread evenly across the site, which confirms the structural changes themselves, not just general visibility growth, were driving the lift. Sales reports that inbound enterprise leads increasingly arrive having already absorbed the firm's specific terminology and framework, shortening the education phase of the sales cycle measurably.

Our content was always technically sound. We were just writing it for people who'd already decided to read 3,000 words, when most of our audience needed the answer in the first three sentences.
